Salt Lake City (Utah). Justice Court

The city had Justices of the Peace (JPs) distinct from the county JPs for city precinct(s). The criminal section was also known as the Police Court (as was the criminal section of any JP court). The city JP court was dropped when the city court was formally established. JPs were elected/appointed starting in the 1880s; before that, an alderman or mayor served as JP. A city court replaced the city JPs ca. 1901.
