South Salt Lake (Utah)

Entity: 1121
Entity Type: Municipality

Abstract

The city of South Salt Lake was incorporated as a city on August 1, 1950, after achieving status as a third-class city based on population. Previously it was incorporated as a town. In 1938 it was incorporated as the Town of Central Park but soon disincorporated because the town didn't get a grant to build a sewer. The grant came through in September 1938. On September 28, 1938, voters approved incorporation. At this time the town's name was changed to South Salt Lake--so named because city fathers wanted people to know it was south of Salt Lake City.

Biography/History Notes

The city of South Salt Lake has a mayor and city council form of government. Before achieving city status, town affairs were governed by a town president and town trustees.
