Abstract

The purpose of the Commission was to construct a historic monument at the mouth of Emigration Canyon in Salt Lake City. This location was of historic significance as it marked the end of the 1,300 mile Mormon Trail. The monument commission was actively involved in overseeing planning, design and construction of the monument in the throughout the 1930's and 1940's. This work culminated in a cornerstone ceremony at the site of the monument on April 5, 1947. In 1951 the Monument was placed under State control and the Utah Historical Society was tasked with overseeing its management. Eventually this duty would fall on the Division of Utah State Parks and Recreation.
