Abstract

Salt Lake Community College originated as the Salt Lake Area Vocational School in 1948, evolving from the War Production Training School and becoming state-supported after lobbying efforts. Despite early financial challenges, the school continued to operate, eventually changing its name multiple times to reflect its evolving mission. Governance shifted from joint local and state control to solely state control, and by 1987, it formally became Salt Lake Community College

Biography/History Notes

Salt Lake Trade Technical Institute was established March 19, 1947 as provided for in the Laws of Utah, 1947, chapter 150 (Senate Bill 76). The act provided for expanding vocational education in school districts with populations of 140,000 or greater.

In 1967, the Salt Lake Trade Technical Institute was renamed the Utah Technical College at Salt Lake ("Laws of Utah, 1967," Chapter 116, pp. 283-284). In 1987, it was again renamed as the Salt Lake Community College ("Laws of Utah, 1987," Chapter 7, p. 167).

In 2025 the Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) Archives closed as a part of the campus Markosian Library. The arranged and described contents started coming to the State Archives that very year. Record series were created and scheduled to align with the fonds and series already completed by their archivists. Specific series that were part of the SLCC Archives should contain notes related to custody history and processing.
