Abstract

Founded by the General Assembly of Deseret (Utah's pre-territorial legislature) on 28 February 1850 as the University of Deseret, the University of Utah is a major urban state university with significant programs of sponsored research and of graduate, professional, and undergraduate education in 15 colleges and professional schools and their authorized degree programs, including law and medical schools.

Chronology: 1850 -- University of the State of Deseret founded, February 28, 1850 ("Laws and Ordinances of the State of Deseret, 1851," reprint ed., 1919, page 93). 1892 -- University of the State of Deseret renamed the University of Utah, February 17, 1892 ("Laws, 1892," Chapter IX, p. 8).

The University of Utah is administered by an Institutional Council under the State Board of Higher Education; by the president; seven vice presidents; and the Council of Academic Deans. College councils composed of faculty members and students are organized under the University Senate and make personnel, curriculum and general policy decisions for the University's 13 separate colleges.
