Abstract

The Office was established to act as a liaison between state government and Utah's Polynesian community and helped resolve civil rights disputes involving ethnic minorities of Polynesian descent.

Biography/History Notes

Office of Polynesian Affairs, purpose: "Assist and represent Polynesian communities within the state to set goals and policies which will bring about a higher quality of life for the Polynesian-Americans of Utah. Work to carry out the governor's executive order." (From "Capitol Connections" newsletter, volume 1, issue 5, September 1993, page 4.)

The office is headed by a director, who is appointed by the governor. There is also an Advisory Council created ca. 1988 by Gov. Bangerter and recreated by Gov. Leavitt which works with and oversees the operations of the office.
