Abstract

On March 11, 1897 the legislature approved an act which created the office of the Dairy and Food Commissioner to enforce all existing or enacted laws regarding the production or sale of food or drug products in the state. In 1920, the commissioner of agriculture became the ex officio dairy and food commissioner and all duties passed to the State Board of Agriculture.

Biography/History Notes

The commissioner had the power to enforce all laws that existed or would be enacted regarding the production, manufacture, or sale of dairy products or the adulteration of any article of food or drink or of any drug. It was the commissioner's duty to inspect any article or milk, butter, cheese, meat vegetable, lard, syrup, coffee, tea, or any other article of food or drink which was suspected to be impure or unhealthy and to prosecute any person or company engaged in adulteration or sale of such products.

The Food and Dairy Commissioner's office was selected by the governor for a two year term.
