Abstract

The Great Salt Lake Authority was created as a division within the Department of Natural resources by chapters 176 and 187 of the 1967 Laws of Utah. The Authority was to develop recreational areas and water conservation within the Great Salt Lake and its environs, specifically including Antelope Island. The Authority was abolished in 1969, and its functions transferred to the Division of Parks and Recreation.

Biography/History Notes

The Great Salt Lake Authority was given the following duties: the development of areas of antelope island for recreational purposes; the testing the feasibility of the use of tailings; and the restoration and preservation of points of historical interest on Antelope Island. Specifically, they were to acquire property; construct facilities on the island while preserving its natural beauty and features; and hire employees to maintain and protect the property.

The Great Salt Lake Authority was comprised of five members appointed by the governor. Not more than three members could be from the same political party, and they were selected because of their understanding of and demonstrated interest in the development of the Great Salt Lake and its environs. One member was selected from each of the counties bordering the Great Salt Lake and the authority chose its chairman from its membership. They also selected a director with the approval of the council of natural resources and with the consent of the governor.
