State Law Library

Entity: 3065
Entity Type: State Government

Abstract

The Territorial Library was created in 1890 (Laws of Utah 1890 ch. LXVII) to control the books, pamphlets, maps, charts, globes, papers, apparatus and valuable specimens in the library. The mandate remains substantially unchanged in 2000 (UCA 2000, 9-7-307). The name was changed from the State Library to the State Law Library in 1957 upon the creation of a new State Library with a broader mandate to serve public libraries rather than the legal community.

Biography/History Notes

At creation, the governor, secretary, chief justice and associate justices of the supreme court formed the board of control for the library. In 1997, the Board of Control was changed to consist of the attorney general, legislative general counsel, and the chief justice of the Supreme Court.
