Abstract

The Board of Education was created in 1896 to provide a uniform system of schools throughout the state.

Biography/History Notes

The duties of the Board of Education include exercising general control and supervision over the public school system, appointing the state superintendent of public instruction, adopting rules and regulations, and establishing standards for the public education system.

When created in 1896, the Board of Education consisted of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, who is the chairman of the board, the president of the State University, the principal of the State agricultural college and two other persons of large experience and eminent professional standing to be appointed by the Governor. Currently the Board of Education consists of 15 members. The state is divided into 15 districts for election of members of the State Board of Education with each district electing one member of the board.

2016 H.B. 147 State Board of Education Revisions moved all statutory references and duties of the State Office of Education to the Board of Education.
