Abstract

The Department of Highways was created in 1959 as the administrative agency for the policy-making Road Commission. The Department was dissolved in 1975 and its duties reassigned to the new Department of Transportation.

Biography/History Notes

The duties of the Department of Highways included maintenance; construction; testing road materials; furnishing plans, specifications and estimates; and other duties as deemed necessary by the Road Commission for the orderly and effective administration of the state highway program.
