Abstract

The Division of Aeronautics promotes and fosters aviation in Utah, providing safe and functional airport systems as an integral part of the statewide transportation program. They provide safe and efficient air transportation to state agencies and those conducting state business, including providing maintenance on state-owned aircraft.

Biography/History Notes

The division has administrative and regulatory powers over aeronautics including: the establishment, location, maintenance, operation, and use of airports, landing fields, landing strips, air markings, air beacons, and other air navigation facilities; the establishment, operation, management, and equipment of all air schools, flying clubs, and other persons giving air instruction; and the enforcement of rules to safeguard from accident and to protect the safety of persons operating or using aircraft and persons and property on the ground. Rules and regulations must comply with federal standards.

The division director was appointed by the Board of Aeronautics with the prior approval of the coordinating council and with the advice and consent of the governor and the senate. He was required to have three years of experience in civil aeronautics and to hold a commercial pilot's license. With the creation of a Department of Transportation in 1975, the division was moved within the department.
