Abstract

Created as a bureau within the Department of Health. Health and Welfare were consolidated in 1967. When Health again became its own department in 1981, the Mental Health Division remained with Social Services. The division was abolished in 2002 upon being combined with the Division of Substance Abuse (#26) to create the new Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health (#3195).

"Division of mental health administers federal and state funds, conducts training, evaluates and monitors local mental health centers, and operates the Utah State Hospital for the severely mentally ill. The main objective of the state hospital and other mental health facilities is to care for mentally ill individuals and furnish them with the proper attendants medical treatment, seclusion, rest, restraint, amusement, occupation, and support that is conducive to their physical and mental well being."
