Abstract

This agency was created ca. 1949 when the Tax Commission began to semi-formally separate into divisions rather than handle all activities as a unit. The purpose of the division is to protect Utah citizens from fraud related to motor vehicle commerce.

Biography/History Notes

Purpose: "Protects Utah citizens from fraud related to motor vehicle commerce and fosters an atmosphere for a healthy sales environment in the motor vehicle industry. Also regulates the automobile industry and investigates commercial auto theft, salvage vehicle fraud, odometer fraud and other vehicle-related crimes."__(From "Capitol Connections" newsletter, volume 2, issue 4, August 1994, page 4.)

The Division of Motor Vehicle Dealers' Administration was created in 1949 when the Tax Commission began to semi-formally divide into divisions rather than handle activities as a unit. By 1954, the Division was a division within the Motor Vehicle Department. By 1981, the departments were abolished, and Motor Vehicle Business Administration was again a separate division. Ca. 1988, the name changed to Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division.
