Abstract

The Office of Black Affairs was first organized in 1972 by then Governor Calvin L. Rampton. The Office of Black Affairs acts as a liaison between state government and Utah's Black community and helps resolve civil rights disputes involving Black citizens.

Biography/History Notes

Purpose: "Advise the governor on issues of concern to the Black Community and provide opportunities for information exchange. Develop a linkage with the African-American community, state and local governments, and the private sector to identify and provide technical assistance, resource development, and information dissemination." "The Office of Black Affairs acts as a liaison between state government and Utah's Black community and helps resolve civil rights disputes involving ethnic minorities." The office is headed by a director appointed by the governor. The Black Advisory Council acts in an advisory capacity.
