Biography/History Notes

"General control and supervision of Utah's higher education system is vested with a State Board of Regents.... The main purpose of the Board of Regents is to provide a quality public system of higher education through central direction and master planning. It attempts to avoid unnecessary duplication by providing for (1) the systematic and orderly development of facilities and quality programs, (2) coordination and consolidation, and (3) systematic development of the role or roles of each institution within the system of higher education consistent with the historic heritage and tradition of each institution." "The Board of Regents consists of 16 members with 15 members being appointed by the governor with the consent of the Senate and one member appointed from nominations of the student body presidents' council. Other than the student appointee, not more than eight members of the board may be from the same political party." (Source: "State and Local Government in Utah," 1992 ed., p. 131.)
