Abstract

The Soil Conservation Committee was established in 1937 to provide assistance to the soil conservation districts. The agency is to provide the necessary planning and programs to ensure preservation, development and utilization of soil and water resources and to protect them from the adverse effects of wind and water erosion, sediment, and sediment related pollutants.

Biography/History Notes

The Committee initially consisted of five members to include the director of the extension service at Utah State University, the commissioner of agriculture, the state engineer, an appointee by the governor, and an appointee which the committee could invite the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture to appoint. With a major reorganization in 1979, the membership consisted of the director of the extension service at Utah State University, the president of the Association of Soil Conservation Districts, the commissioner, the director (or designee of) the natural resources department, and six district supervisors. In 1993, two more members--the director of the Department of Environmental Quality and a seventh district supervisor--were added to the Commission, bringing membership to a total of twelve, and the agency was brought under the Department of Agriculture.
