Health Care Financing adminsters the federal Medicaid and the state's Utah Medical Assistance Program. The Division is one of the largest health insurers in Utah. Many people encounter a serious illness or injury and receive only short-term financial assistance from Medicaid. This can amount to several hundred thousand dollars such as with a heart or liver transplant that an individual's insurance will not cover. Others have chronic, ongoing medical problems that Medicaid helps pay for on a permanent basis. In order to best serve its clients, the Division works closely with other government agencies, the medical community and advocacy groups. About two of every three Utahns in nursing homes receive financial help from Medicaid because they cannot afford to pay thousands each month for this care.
