Abstract
The Division of Laboratory Services protects the public's health through microbiologic testing for organisms that cause sexually transmitted diseases, rabies, viral infections, including AIDS, and tuberculosis. The Lab also screens all Utah newborns for matabolic diseases that can cause disabilities. In conjunction with the Department of Environmental Quality, environmental chemistry testing of streams and lakes, drinking water supplies and potentially hazardous waste helps protect the environment. The Lab assists enforcement agencies and the Office of the Medical Examiner by performing toxicology tests. These include forensic work to help determine the cause of death and alcohol and drug testing for driving under the influence cases.
