Abstract
Scott Milne Matheson Jr. was born in Chicago, IL on January 8, 1929. He received a bachelor in political science from the University of Utah 1950, then he got a law degree from Stanford 1952. In between degrees, he married Norma Warenski on August 25, 1951. He opened his own private law practice when he moved to Utah. He became General Counsel for the Union Pacific Railroad 1958-1976. He didn't dable much in politics, but he became the democratic choice to run for Governor. He was elected and served 1977-1985. During his term, he was engaged in "Project Bold" which involved exchanging state and federal lands. He was greatly concerned about radiation and cancer since the disease had taken several of his family members and would eventually take him as well. He opposed the MX missile system setting up in the Utah desert and against all open air testing of atomic weapons. After his term ended, he returned to private law practice and joined the firm Parsons, Behle & Latimer. He died on October 7, 1990.
