Scope and Content

The Kanab and Kane County Economic Development Strategic Plans were prepared by the Kane County Economic Development Working Team, which included city council representatives from Kanab, Orderville, Big Water, and lay citizens. The Kane County strategic plan was adopted by the Kane County Commission in January 1996. Both the Kanab and Kane County strategic plans were adopted by the Kanab City Council in February 1998, as an appendage to the general plan. This booklet, including both plans, begins with a demographic and economic analysis of Kanab, Kane County's largest community. It includes statements about Kanab's strengths and weaknesses, and a vision statement of Kanab's ideal economy. The booklet includes a strategic plan for Kane County. Demographic and economic information about the county is followed by objectives for improvement. Team members felt that improvement depends on the county's ability to 1) diversify and expand business, 2) strengthen communication, 3) enhanceeducation, 4) develop infrastructure, and 5) attract new business to Kane County. The plan includes many goals for Kane County which are categorized as very high priority, high priority, medium priority, and low priority. Very high priority goals include developing the Grand Staircase National Monument as an economic asset for Kane County and promoting Kane County as a tourist center for visitors of national parks, monuments and public lands. Kane County needs to increase communication with the Bureau of Land Management, the State of Utah, and U.S. Park and Forest Services because these agencies administer more than 95% of the land in Kane County. Their policies have an immense impact on Kane County communities.
