Summary of Records

This series contains a set of spiral-bound notebooks used to record a various aspects of cemetery management. The books document efforts to make improvements in the care of the cemetery and to document who was buried in the cemetery. The records appear to have been created as part of this effort to modernize and professionalize cemetery management in the mid-1970's through the mid-1980's. Much of the information in the records relates to the implementation of perpetual care for the cemetery. Books 1-5 are arranged by plat and lot number, with one page for each lot. Known burials in each lot are listed, along with birth and death dates. The source of this burial information is not clear, but it may be have come from earlier records and/or from a survey of surviving headstones. Along with the lists of burials, the records include notes about correspondence with descendants and record of payments made toward perpetual care for the lots. The records also include notes about a variety of cemetery matters, such as the identity of unmarked graves, the transfer of burial plots, and current deaths and burials. A number of letters and obituaries are inter-filed in the books. The last two "Miscellaneous information" notebooks contain a variety of information, including lists of perpetual care payments, lots without perpetual care, lots transferred back to Levan Town, newspaper clippings about burial fees in other communities, and names of people not in the cemetery records, but buried in the cemetery, according to relatives.

Arrangement

Alphanumerical by plat and lot numbers.

During the life of these records, a couple of numbering systems were applied to the notebooks. For microfilming purposes the books were put in a logical order and assigned numbers 1-7. The various numbering systems are evident in the container list.
