Summary of Records

This series contains three record books for Weber County 1st School District. The oldest book (1873-1877) was created when the school district included just a single school. It contains minutes of the trustees and a small history of the district from 1856. The other two books in the series were created after the 2nd and 3rd districts were merged into the 1st in 1878. They contain minutes of the trustees that document discussion of tax rates, tax and tuition revenue, the building of the Central School and various other school issues. They also contain receipts for items purchased for the school, including an organ and lawn for the grounds. In February of 2017 the following items were added to the series: Reciepts and payments of bills, Teacher term reports and cancelled checks. At the time of the creation of these records, many school districts had been established in Weber County. Each school district had three trustees who were to, "employ teachers, make the rate of tuition, take charge of the building...provide furniture and appliances," etc. These responsibilities are shown and carried out within this set of records. The minutes and financial books address taxes, expenses for school materials, and school teacher salaries. Education was funded in Ogden through taxes and tuition and later received financial support from the territorial government. The 1st School District was also known as Bench School District. Prior to 1878 it included just a single school. In 1878 the other two school districts in Ogden were merged into the 1st District, expanding the number of schools to three. All school districts in Ogden, including Lynne and Mound Fort, combined to form the Ogden City School District in 1890. Sources used in compiling this information include: 1903-1904. Annual Report of the Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools: With Rules and Regulations of the Public Schools of the City of Ogden, Utah; Containing Also a Brief Historical Sketch, With Comparative Tables From the Time of the Organization of The Board 1890 To June 30, 1904. Ogden, Utah: J.O. Woody Printing Co. Haefeli, Leo and Frank J. Cannon. 1883. Directory of Ogden City and Weber County. Ogden City, Utah: Ogden Herald Publishing Company, Printers Peterson, G. Ross, and Robert Parsons. 2001. Ogden City: Its Governmental Legacy; A Sesquicentennial History. Ogden, Utah: Chapelle Limited. Sloan, Robert W. 1884.
