Schedule Description

These records contain birth registers recorded during the years 1898 through 1905. Each entry has father's birthplace, mother 's birthplace, residence, the name of the informant making the report, date recorded, child's name, date of birth, sex, legitimacy, race, color, and parents' names. On the reel, the register is followed by individual certificates.

Scope and Content

These records contain record of births primarily from areas of the county outside of Ogden. Each entry typically includes the age and birthplace of the parents, residence of the parents, informant's name and position, filing date, remarks, assigned number, surname of father, date of birth, sex and condition, race, color, and names of the parents. On the microfilm, the register is followed by individual certificates and copies of entries where certificates are not available. These copies were cut from pages at the beginning of the book. After the book was microfilmed, filing dates and remarks recorded on the certificates and copies were added to the book itself.
Beginning in 1898, physicians and midwives were required to keep record of each birth for which they assisted. In their absence, the parents were required to complete a report. They then reported quarterly to the county clerk or in the case of incorporated cities, to the local board of health and they would in turn report to the county clerk (Revised Statutes of Utah 1898, Title 57, p. 474-475).
In 1905, the state passed a law requiring each county to file a uniform certificate with the State Bureau of Vital Statistics.

Notes

These records are chronological by year but not by month. Entries were recorded in order of report, not by date of birth.
