Schedule Description

These records contain birth registers recorded during the years 1898 to 1905. Each entry has information regarding date of birth, sex, race, color, place of birth, parents' names, residence, the name of the informant making the report, and an assigned number.

Scope and Content

This series contains a register used to record births in the county during the years 1898 through 1905. Each entry in the register contains such information as the sex, color, and race or nativity of the child, the date and place of birth, parents' names and place of residence, name of doctor, midwife, or informant, and an assigned reporting number.
Beginning in 1898, State law required physicians and midwives to report each birth at which they assisted professionally. In their absence, parents were required to make a report. They then reported quarterly to the county clerk or in the case of incorporated cities, to the local board of health and they would in turn report to the county clerk. (Revised Statutes of Utah 1898, Title 57, p. 474-475) Despite such requirements, some births were not recorded in the birth register during this time period.
In 1905, the state passed a law requiring each county to file a uniform certificate with the State Bureau of Vital Statistics in lieu of maintaining a birth register.

Notes

This series was microfilmed by the Utah State Archives in May 2014 as part of a National Historical Publications and Records Commission  (NHPRC) funded local records preservation project.

The microfilm of this series from 1966 was processed by M. Call in September 1998. Because the microfilm copy was almost illegible, the series was re-microfilmed in 2014, the original records were transferred to the State Archives, and the series was re-processed by Alan Barnett.
