Scope and Content

This series contains a variety of materials documenting communication between Governor Lee's office and the news media. It includes official statements on various topics prepared by the governor's office for release to newspapers and radio stations. In addition to these press releases, the series contains considerable correspondence between Governor Lee and representatives of news media. Some documents in the series are not clearly linked to the news media. Such documents include letters to critics of Lee's policies and materials that are public relations related, such as public speeches. While not in a format specific for news release, some of this correspondence may have been released to the press as a way of airing the Governor's views. The series also includes a number of documents that have no clear connection to the news media or public relations and may have simply been misfiled.

Research Note

Arrangement of materials in this series is documented by the microfilm copy made in 1979 and presumably represents the order in which the records were received from the Governor's office. The structure of the original filing system used in the Governor Lee's office is evident in the series. Filing of documents was not always consistent and some documents are clearly misfiled. For example, much of the correspondence in this series could just as easily have been filed in with Governor Lee's other correspondence (Series 211) and press related correspondence can also be found in that series. Other items, such as letters of introduction, are labeled for filing elsewhere, but were clearly filed in the wrong place. Additional press releases can be found elsewhere in Governor Lee's papers. Despite such inconsistencies, documents in the series have been kept as much as possible in the order in which they came from the Governor's office, as represented by the 1979 microfilming. Because filing, practice was not always consistent, researchers will want to approach their search broadly, scanning the entire container list, as well as consulting the inventories for other record series from Governor Lee's office.
