Summary of Records
Scope and Content
This series contains press releases which Governor Matheson's press secretary prepared for public release, as well as related correspondence that served either as background information for press releases or as materials that would be released to the public in full. Press releases include announcements of new appointments to state positions, notices of upcoming conferences which Matheson would attend, details of new policies, and descriptions of Matheson's actions on certain pieces of legislation. Issues that are widely covered in the press releases include the possible basing of the MX missile system in Utah, which was fiercely debated from 1979 to 1981; and the severe floods that Utah experienced in 1983 and 1984. Throughout the course of his two administrations, Matheson's press secretaries included Michael Youngren, Maggie Wilde, Alene Bentley, and Malin Foster.
