New Finding Aids at the Archives: April 2019

Our archivists write inventories as finding aids to describe them for research. Here are the new ones created during April 2019: Department of Administrative Services (Utah). The State of Utah began issuing birth certificates in 1905. Before the law was passed, local government offices used different methods to record the vital records of births and deaths in their community. In 1898, birth and death registrations were  done within the offices of county clerks across the state. For births, physicians and midwives reported the births they attended

Even with indexes to Utah birth certificates, there is an additional research tool for births recorded before 1934. That is when as part of a Works Progress Administration project all birth certificates in Utah since 1904 were indexed and published in several volumes. Specialists in vital statistics still use these books as an aid to locating a birth record. Arrangement

Birth certificates issued by the Utah Office of Vital Records and Statistics in 1909 are now online and freely available to the public. The searchable index and digital images may be accessed from the Utah Birth Certificate Index. As all birth certificates at least 100 years old are public, browse 1910-1915 online. All public records at the Utah State Archives are accessible through the Research Center. However, once processed the records are easier to use with proper storage and fuller descriptions, including online series inventories.
