Celebrating Our Volunteers

December 29, 2017

’Tis the Season for Season’s Greetings, anticipating tax season, seasonal inversion, Winter solstice, holiday season… and for students, it’s the end of Fall semester, with tests and papers finished, waiting for grades to be posted. At the Archives, our interns, volunteers, and Archives staff members recently celebrated the culmination of a year of research, learning, and giving.

Four Salt Lake Community College interns from Professor Ted Moore’s History class had the opportunity to practice their presentation skills in front of an appreciative audience of mentors and staff members on December 11th.
Holly Hoopes worked with Alan Barnett on processing historical records from the State Hospital in Provo, Utah.
Harley Davidson worked on processing 1930s mug shots from the Ogden Police Department. He also did research on Kearns and the Army base established there.
Cody Disney presented his findings on the State Road Commission established in Utah in 1909.
Leslie Rencher, also a student at SLCC, was an intern with Dr. Chris Merritt in the Division of State History. She shared her presentation on the Civilian Conservation Corp projects in Juab County. She also used records found in the Archives to document her research.

Ongoing super volunteers Lily Peterson, Avalon Snell, Steven Thain, Dani Newton, Jack Jerman, Alyssa Fonoimoana, Allen Clark, Melissa Rupp, Patrick Ogden, Linda Lindstrom, and Gordon Wright made steady progress processing groups of records to prepare them for public access and helping patrons in the Research Center.

On December 15th, 2017, an Annual Awards luncheon was held. The 34 volunteers who gave 20 hours or more during the year were awarded certificates of gratitude. The twelve volunteers who contributed over ninety hours received an Amazon gift card along with their certificate. Ken Williams, Archives Director, accepted a check for $106,867.78, which represents the equivalent value of the volunteer time donated to the Archives this year.
