Our FREE, day-long family history workshop is a week from tomorrow!

One of our main goals for this event is to bring together experts from the various repositories who hold records that would be useful to family historians. The experts will talk about the records and how to access them. With that being said, let me introduce you to our experts and their topics:

Vital Records are key to documenting life. As part of her work here at the Utah State Archives, Gina Strack processes and digitizes our birth and death certificates when they arrive at the archives. Mike Wynder is the archivist and appointed records officer for our Department of Health’s Office of Vital Records and Statistics.

Alan Barnett wears a number of hats here at the Utah State Archives. He will be providing two sessions for our workshop. His first session will be a discussion of the value of archives (this will include a tour of the Utah State Archives by Rae Gifford). His second session will discuss cemetery records and how to use them for research.

Beth Taylor is a U.S./Canada research specialist with the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. She has more than a decade of research experience and has taught more than 200 classes. For us, she will focus on how to use federal land records to find your family.

Court records are a treasure trove of information about the people in the past. Divorces, family civil disputes, and criminal cases are littered throughout family histories. Rosemary Cundiff was part of a team that created an inventory of the historical court records across the state and began the projects to fully process these records. Alyson Brown has been the Clerk of the Court for the Second District Court, Davis County for a number of years. She has diligently worked to preserve the historic records and provide access to the more recent court records as allowed by current law.

Diana Elder is one of the authors of Research Like A Pro: A Genealogist’s Guide. She will take the court records discussion even further by digging into probate records and the extremely valuable information that can be found in them, from estates to adoptions.

Holly Hansen is the President and Founder of Family History Expos, Inc. She has more than 20 years of experience in family history education. She will be providing a broad overview of how to research your family history using Utah’s repositories.

We know that there are any number of places that might hold the historical records you need. County archives, historical societies, public libraries, and colleges and universities can be full of family stories. We brought together the following experts from some of our local repositories to talk about what resources they might have:

  • Karri Krattley (Salt Lake County Archives)
  • Sarah Singh (Weber State University)
  • Cherie Willis (Salt Lake Public Library)
  • Lara Bangerter (Lehi Historical Society)
