ARO Spotlight: Kylie Cone in the Office of Administrative Rules
Kylie Cone is the Senior Business Analyst and Records Officer for the Office of Administrative Rules. She’s been with the office for 5 years and about a third of her job is records management. The Office of Administrative Rules enables citizen participation in their own government by supporting agency rulemaking and ensuring agency compliance with the Utah Administrative Rulemaking Act. Let’s learn more about Kylie…
Tell us about a RIM project you’ve worked on.
Previous to my being hired on, the Office of Administrative Rules kept all paper records. Since my hiring we have been able to get rid of 100 archive boxes and 4 blue recycle bins worth of paper records that were actually digital records. We have also been able to harvest and send to archives 32,000 permanent email records.
What have you found most challenging about your job?
The sheer diversity of records. It seems when you finally think you have a handle on all the records your office has, new ones show up. Being able to search the general retention schedule with the new interface has been a great help in classifying each new record that shows up.
What is your favorite part of the job?
The challenge. It isn’t easy but I love the challenge.
What advice would you give other records officers and managers?
Start small. Look at one record at a time. If you look at the all the records the office creates at once you will get overwhelmed. Take it one thing at a time.
